Project Rewind: Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walkway

pedestrian grating

Location: Bondi to Bronte, NSW
Project Type: Public Space
Opened: 2009-2010
Weldlok Solution: Aluminium and Fibreglass (FRP) Flooring

The spectacular backdrop of the coastline between Bondi and Bronte, NSW presented a challenge in aesthetics and performance.

The 2.5km walkway joins two very popular destinations. A coastal environment with harsh salt-spray air and complex geotechnical, structural and environmental conditions required a thoughtful and high performing engineering solution.

The materials selected included Weldlok aluminium and fibreglass products. Highly resistant to harsh weather and pedestrian conditions, these materials also allow light and water through to native vegetation.

The walkway flooring features Weldlok FRP Grating, manufactured through a process of interweaving high strength fibreglass strands which are then set in a highly chemical and flame resistant resin. These specific properties make Weldlok FRP Grating ideal for exterior applications such as national parks walkways.

Like all Weldlok grating and flooring, the products for the Bondi to Bronte walkway were designed and manufactured to comply with the requirements of AS1657. The pedestrian-friendly flooring is especially slip-resistant and was chosen in a dark grey colour to work in harmony with timber surfaces and the rockscape of the local environment.

Standard profiles are available ex-stock however for large or specific projects Weldlok can manufacture and fabricate a custom range of profiles in Australia to suit.
